I am an accredited group analyst and psychodynamic psychotherapist (UKCP registered). I have been facilitating groups for over 20 years and been involved in running therapy groups since 2004. I trained at the Institute of Group Analysis in London and currently divide my clinical practice between both individual and group work in the NHS, in a university setting and in private practice. I am also an experienced consultant providing training and coaching in organisations, and trained as an executive coach at the Tavistock Institute. I consider group therapy to be a truly creative space where my job is to create a safe and supportive environment where people can think, reflect and discover themselves in sometimes surprising ways. The reliance on relating, participation and collaboration make it an especially dynamic and rewarding form of therapy.

I offer evidence-based psychological therapies for a wide range of emotional, relational and behavioural difficulties. I am trained in a number of other therapeutic approaches, including IPT, trauma focused CBT and mentalisation. The benefit of experiencing group therapy is that it strengthens and enriches the therapeutic experience for all
the individuals in the group. Each member gains from listening to and being heard by others in a safe and supportive environment. Everyone is encouraged to speak about their current difficulties and how these may connect with past experiences and potentially be re-played in the group to be worked through, understood and changed. Group members come with a range of presenting difficulties including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, childhood trauma, personality difficulties. Each online group lasts for an hour and a half and is at the same time each week. Group members are mixed in gender and age. The group consists of up to 8 members. Before joining a group, potential members have an individual assessment with me. When joining, members agree to keep what is talked about in the group confidential. In the interests of confidentiality meeting outside the group is discouraged.

I am a Counselling Psychologist, an accredited Group Analyst and a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist (HCPC, IGA and UKCP registered). I have over 25 years of extensive psychotherapy experience working with adults and young people (16+) in a variety of settings including a Garrison Medical Centre, a Secondary School, a Psychology Service in Physical health and for the last 10 years in a NHS Tertiary Specialist Psychotherapy Service in the North East of England.
I grew up in Northern Ireland during the ‘Troubles’ qualifying as a Registered General Nurse in 1984 and moving to Edinburgh (Scotland) in 1986 to train as a Midwife witnessing the impact of poverty, teenage pregnancy and HIV within the local community. I use a systemic lens to view personal experiences of psychological distress as the personal is always social and the social is always personal. I am always fascinated in learning how our family histories, migration and transgenerational traumas influence our life choices both personally and professionally.
Group Analytic Psychotherapy provides a timely space (90 minutes for 40 sessions per year) to help you find new meanings in your life through developing therapeutic conversations together, held with kindness and compassion. I will provide a space to talk together about difficult and painful things so that you can uncover or reconnect with your potential. Importantly, it will be a safe-space to recuperate when life has been tough, to re-energize and gain a sense of belonging. Often there are secondary gains of improved social agency and empowerment to become actively involved in your local community.
Online Group Analytic Psychotherapy increases accessibility and diversity of membership. I offer an initial assessment and group preparation before joining the group. It is important that you are able to create a private therapy space to attend the weekly online session maintaining the confidentiality of the group. Each member joins the group as a ‘Stranger’ but leaves the group as an ‘Intimate Member’. Group members (up to 9 including myself) must respect the therapeutic space and are encouraged to not have contact with other group members outside of the group. Members are expected to join for a minimum of 1 year (40 sessions).
I run a rolling programme of 6 week ‘Online Taster’ sessions as an introduction to Group Analytic Psychotherapy, so you can make a more informed choice as to whether this kind of therapy might be helpful for you.

"In an individualizing, fast-moving, competitive world, group analysis challenges us to slow down, to sit and feel and think in the company of others. It often makes us confront questions of power, envy and inequality, as the group grapples with the injuries of living in an unjust world. It offers us the opportunity to explore what it means to belong, and to not-belong, and to develop new ways of being and relating. It can be a deeply moving and transformative experience, both for those who have previous experience of psychotherapy and counselling and those who are coming to therapy for the first time." (Prof. Sasha Roseneil) Why just for therapists and health & social care professionals? I am increasingly aware of the need for self compassion and the impact of moral injury. I also believe we are often constrained by our own shame and self-criticism and by the projections we elicit in others. Also, we know we “can use work - to stop feeling lonely, to feel clever, kind, creative, special and loved and cared for.” (Libby Nugent, @becomingethical) The group provides the container and the medium in which we can find both challenge and support, become more aware of the unconscious and allow ourselves to shift between, and explore new ways, of being in the world.

I am a CPD trainer for the NHS and the Royal Society of Public Health, where I deliver training on behaviour change and health promotion theory I hold full memberships with Institute of Group Analysis and Group Analysis Society International and am registered with both the UKCP and BACP, abiding by their codes of ethical standards and confidentiality. I run psychodynamic therapy groups and see couples and individuals both online and in person. I also offer non-managerial supervision. I help people to become more aware of the burdens and difficulties that brought them to therapy, and to become better equipped to deal with them. Whether in group, couples or individual treatment, you will be invited to explore how past experiences have shaped how you are managing current challenges. By providing a confidential and containing space, I will support you to use such awareness to enable you to adopt different choices. A key part of the therapy will involve dealing with matters which may be currently causing you distress. It is not only about looking at the past, but about exploring how to shape the present and ultimately the future in more constructive ways.

My name is Dan Anderson and I am a group analyst and psychiatrist by background. Having qualified as a medical doctor in 2002, I have been working in mental health for 20 years and qualified as a group analyst in 2017. I have a keen interest in mental health and its relationship to sexuality and gender. I have written about these topics as part of my research and I maintain a clinical practice focused around these areas, including supervising professionals providing psychotherapy who identify as a sexual or gender minority. I also have an interest in addressing prejudice and discrimination in psychotherapy and the training of psychotherapists. I firmly believe in the ability of a therapy group to bring people together from minoritised groups to find their voice who otherwise might feel disconnected and isolated from wider society.
